New VHF DSC marine radio courses with the International Sailing School of Yuksel.

The Short Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required by law to operate a marine VHF radio fitted with DSC (digital selective calling) onboard a vessel.

A radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board a yacht and it is important to know the correct procedures. English is the accepted language for radio communications so reasonable English is required to obtain a certificate as an operator.

The course uses DSC radio simulators and takes one day including the final examination for the certificate.

Pete Johnson is an instructor recognized by the RYA for this course. He will guide you through the use and procedures of DSC radios.

The Course Contents include:

  • The basics of radio operation
  • The correct frequencies (channels) to be used
  • Distress, emergency and medical assistance procedures
  • Making ship to ship and ship to shore calls
  • Digital Selective Calling (DSC) using simulators
  • Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)
  • Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB)
  • Search and Rescue (SART)

Successful completion of the course means that you are a licensed (for life) operator of a marine DSC radio.
